Taiho Pharmaceutical is committed to biodiversity based on the Otsuka Group's Biodiversity Policy
Otsuka Group's Biodiversity Policy
Basic Approach
The Otsuka Group recognizes that biodiversity is an indispensable natural capital for all business activities. As a member of a society that benefits from nature, we will take into consideration the impact of our business activities on biodiversity and work to conserve and restore biodiversity towards realizing a sustainable society that passes rich nature to future generations.
Guidelines
- We will clarify the relationship between biodiversity and business activities throughout the value chain and promote the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources.
- We will promote the development of biodiversity considerate products and technologies and strive to reduce the impact on nature.
- We will respect international agreements on biodiversity and comply with treaties and laws and ensure the proper access and use of genetic resources, as well as the fair and equitable distribution of the benefits accruing therefrom.
- We will communicate with various stakeholders such as administrative agencies, local residents, and NGOs, and collaborate with local communities, to conserve and restore biodiversity.
- We will strive to promote conservation activities by raising awareness about the relationship between our business activities and biodiversity.
Introduction of Environmentally Responsible Materials
Taiho Pharmaceutical is committed to environmental friendliness and has incorporated FSC-certified paper into some of its information materials for prescription drugs and packaging materials for consumer healthcare products, such as the PITAS Medical Troach. We also use some biomass ink for the labels of the TIOVITA Drink series and for the packaging of BUP-4 LADY, which was launched in 2021.
Biotope Using Plant Wastewater
Okayama Taiho Pharmaceutical uses approximately 100 tons of purified water and cooling water (with a quality equivalent to or better than tap water) per day for TIOVITA Drink glass bottle cleaning and sterilizing processes. However, due to the high water purity and the high temperature of about 40°C, it was not suitable to return to the natural environment, so it was all discharged for sewage treatment.
Okayama Taiho Pharmaceutical uses approximately 100 tons of purified water and cooling water per day, which is equivalent to or better quality than tap water, to lean and sterile of glass bottles used in the TIOVITA drink series. However, since the water purity was too high and the temperature was as high as about 40°C, it was not suitable for the natural environment, it was all discharged to the sewage treatment.
The biotope was installed as a solution to avoid wasting this clean water. By draining water through nature-like biotope channels, the water is converted to organic-rich water that is easy for living things to live in. At the same time, the water temperature is lowered to the outside air temperature so it can eventually be released into the ocean. Today, freshwater fish such as medaka breed in the small river of the biotope, seasonal flowers bloom in the waterfront, and insects and wild birds fly. Furthermore, the release of water rich in organic matter into the sea has a positive impact on the surrounding tidal flats and ocean ecosystems.
Since the opening of the biotope on March 29, 2011, the biotope has been used by local elementary school students for social study tours (currently suspended). Every year, we welcomed many visitors come to the site to learn about the rich nature of the Seto Inland Sea and the importance of nature conservation. We also work with local residents to keep the surrounding rivers and beaches clean.
