Circular Economy

  • Goal 12 Responsible Consumption and Production

Taiho Pharmaceutical is promoting efforts to reduce the amount of waste discharged and the amount of simple incineration and landfill. In addition, we are engaged in various activities with the aim of achieving the Otsuka group's 2050 Environmental Vision of "Net Zero," which is to "reduce the total environmental impacts across all its business activities to zero."

Trends in the Volume of Waste, Simple Incineration and Landfill Disposal

  • Total waste & Simple incineration/landfill

To help achieve the Otsuka group’s 2028 target of a 50% reduction in simple incineration and landfill disposal (compared to 2019), we are working to reduce waste emissions and to effectively utilize waste, using material recycling and thermal recovery, among other measures.

Material Recycling Initiatives

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Otsuka) and Taiho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Taiho) have started a material recycling initiative for press-through packaging (PTP) waste generated during pharmaceutical packaging. This initiative commenced in May 2024. This material recycling initiative seeks to reduce environmental impact by recycling PTP waste generated by Otsuka and Taiho. It utilizes technology to separate PTP sheets for packaging tablets and capsules into plastic and aluminum foil and includes a modal shift to rail transport, thereby helping to reduce CO2 emissions.
